I installed the program for the first time and get an error running it.
You probably need the latest Visual Basic Runtime files.
The United Stated English versioncan be downloaded directly from microsoft here.

It wont finish the public and private key exchange.
Make sure that the two people in the conversation (only two at a time) exchanging keys both have the Lock password box UNchecked.

Just wondering what encryption methods are used by "Encrypted Messenger" ?
--James G.

Encrypted Messenger Personal Edition uses the Blowfish Algorithm to encrypt your messages. This means that you and the chatter must have the exact same password.

Corporate and Enterprise Edition also use the RSA algorythm to exchange public and private keys.
For example (using Corporate or Enterprise Edition):

Joe sends a message to Sue.
Sue relizes she can not dencrypt it, so she sends Joe her public key.
Joe knows he just sent a message to Sue and is expecting her public key.
Joe uses Sue's public key to encrypt the key he used to send the original message.
Sue receives Joe's encrypted key.
Only Sue can decrypt the key with her private key. (Her private key is a match to the public key she sent to Joe)
Sue extracts the key sent from Joe and uses it to decrypt the original message.
Now they can communicate :)

Using the Enterprise and Corporate version you may have noticed a small time gap when sending the first encrypted message before the two of you can communicate. This is the public and private keys passing through the internet and your systems.

Once the keys are exchanged, they are both using the Blowfish Algorythm, but neither one knows what the key is. This is good in case someone monitored the conversation and plans to try and force the information from either user. No one knows the key. If you are wondering, the random keys generated are based off of a GUID.

The only difference between Corporate and Enterprise version is the ability to transfer files encrypted. However if you can not transfer an unencrypted file due to firewalls, etc. you will not be able to transfer an encrypted file since it uses the exact same process as Microsoft's Instant Messenger.

I downloaded and installed a newer version, but I still see the older version.
You must first UNINSTALL the older version before you install the newer version.
If you have already installed the newer version, uninstall both versions and then install the newer version.
You can uninstall from the Add/Remove Programs section of your Control Panel.

When I Right Click (to copy or paste), the encrypted messenger window covers the menu.
This has been fixed in the Encrypted Messenger 1.1 suite.

When I try to use it in Windows 98 or ME, it does not do anything.
